Analytical Reasoning

The exercises in this section test one's ability to sense the distances w.r.t   the specified directions

General Formulae

1.The distance from a point after travelling a distanc of "a" metres in the horizontal direction and a distance of "b" metres in the vertical direction  is equal to a*a+b*b.

2.North-south direction is vertical direction

3.East-West Direction is horizontal direction

Example 1

John travels a distance of say 3 metres towards east from his house,he then travels a distance of 7 metres southwards and then travels a distance of 3 metres towards east and finally travels a distance of 10 metres southwards. What is the vertical distance from his house?

solution:

The distance travelled by John is equal to 10+7=17m

 Example 2

A person starts from his house and travels 5 metres towards east, then 6 metres towards right, and then travels 8 metres towards east and 2 metres
towards south after that. Finally he turns right and travels 7 metres. What is the total distance he has travelled from his house in the north-south direction?

solution:

The distance travelled from the house in the vertical direction is equal to
 6+2=8 metres

Example 3

A person travels 7 metres towrds East ,then he turns right and travels 2m,then travels 5m towards left and then proceeds 2m northwards and finally travels 2m westwards .How far is he from his house in the vertical direction?

solution:

The distance covered by the person in the vertical direction from his house is equal to 2-2=0 m.
since 2 m is towards north and 2m towards south,he is 0 m away from his in the vertical direction.

Example 4

Starting from one location,a person travels a distance of 5m southwards, thentravels a distance of 7 mleftwards, then travels 5m northwards and finally travels 6m eastwards to reach a new loction. What is the distance he travelled from his previous location?

solution:

The distance travelled vertically is 5-5=0m and the distance travelled horizontally is equal to 7+6=13m.Thus, the distance travelled from his original location is equal to 13m.

Example 5:

A person starts from his house and goes 2m towads east, then turns right and goes 25m and again goes towards east travelling 15m and turns left and travels for 18m.He then goes towards east and travels 7m.How far is he from his house?

solution:
 2m
 -----|
 | |-7m--
 | |
 25m | |18m
 | |
 -15m--------

The total distance covered horizontally is 2+15+7=24m and vertically is 25-18=7m.Thus,the total distance is equal to \/24*24+7*7=25m
